Why Coming 2 America Will Win The Month

The highly anticipated sequel to Coming To America is playing on Amazon Prime giving the country a chance to revisit one of Eddy Murphies most popular characters. The movie which is playing for free will highlight a Friday full of streaming fare including the season-ending episode of Wanda Vision and the premium streaming option for Raya and The Last Dragon.

Murphy returns as Akeem the King of the fictional African country Zamunda along with Arsinioooooooooooooh Hall as Semmi. The movie also reunites the two with legendary actor James Earl Jones.

Coming 2 America stands to reach a tremendous audience that has been deprived of high-profile movies for a year and has had very little to laugh about in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Other well-timed and targeted movies over the past years have managed to hit the perfect note with audiences by their mere existence.

When Trolls 2 World Tour began streaming a few months into the lockdown it was a godsend for parents who could provide something new and unique for their kids to check out for a few hours after months of stagnation. The sequel proved far more popular than its predecessor, but it did not have to compete against any other major titles for attention. The Apple TV+ release of Greyhound starring Tom Hanks happened to be the first major drama to hit the scene and featured America’s dad in a role made for him. Wonder Woman 1984, though later panned by many fit the bill with its Christmas day release on HBO Max. This will be Amazon’s star turn.

Expect headlines soon about how Coming 2 America is the most-watched Amazon Original Movie or even most-watched original production ever. Such classifications are a little overblown considering how recently the company got into original productions but you can better believe it will be happy to tout the numbers.
