Disney+ has a new top series. It’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. over a two-day period more than 1.7 million viewers tuned in to the new show which is part of Disney’s build-up of original content based around its Marvel and Star Wars brands. No matter how many people say they could care less about superhero content or that there is too much of it on TV, like reality TV and talent competitions it appears to be one of the big drivers of viewing in the US.

HBO Max had a similar result when it rolled out Zack Snyders Justice League. 1.8 million people watched at least part of the 4-hour movie between March 18 and March 21.  Certainly more people have been watching both titles since that point.

Whether it is a need for escapism or just nostalgia these kinds of offerings are becoming bankable assets for networks and streaming services. The CW has leveraged over half of its programming schedule on content based on DC comics. The Flash, Black Lightning, Supergirl, Superman And Lois, Bat Woman and The Legends of Tomorrow all live on the CW. Netflix built its own Marvel Universe long before Disney+ jumped onto the scene. And since then the company has signed numerous deals to produce more content outside of the Marvel world with notable shows like The Umbrella Academy, and movies such as Code 8 staring Stephen Amel (formally of the CW’s Arrow), and film The Old Guard, based on a graphic novel about immortal mercenaries.

So if you are part of the, there are too many shows and movies about superheroes crowd, you may want to put on blinders for a while. On the other hand, if that is what you love enjoy your moment in the sun.
