The obvious eventuality of the DC Universe has finally emerged officially. DC Universe will be rebranded as a comic and fan centered service and no longer be a streaming service. The streaming content such as DC universe originals as well as legacy material will join the rest of the DC library at HBO Max. The move should be one that satisfies everyone and disappoints nobody. The inchange will kick in at the start of 2021.
The DC Universe will be Rebranded DC Universe Infinite and be home to a huge library of DC’s digital comics including titles that came out in print as little as 6 months ago. It will be a DC comics lovers paradise featuring exclusive launches like DCeased: Hope at World’s End, Harley Quinn: Black + White + Red, and Injustice: Year Zero.
Meanwhile, at the Hall of Justice, I mean HBO Max, Warner Media’s main premium streaming service the DC section stands to grow by 30 titles or more as all of the DC Animated movies and other material will become available on HBO Max. This will make HBO Max the unquestioned destination for DC on-screen content much in the way Disney+ is for the MCU. It will be complete with animated movies, HBO Max originals like the upcoming Green Lantern series as well as the Snyder Cut of The Justice League.
The solution to the issue of having two competing streaming services with DC content along with CW now has a neat little bow on it. The DC Universe was well regarded for its digital comics service. When talk of shuttering it began comics fans worried they would lose access to it. It will still have the fan centered communication and leave the streaming content to a service built around it exclusively.
So there you go DC fans. You can get all the digital comics you want and will now have one place to check out streaming content. While some will undoubtedly wish that there was still streaming content on DC Universe fans can be assured that the well funded HBO Max will grow the brands including the renewed Harley Quinn. The service as it was never made any sense in its mishmash form.
